Lyguistics (Explicit) - Cunnin’ Lynguists
I went “bouldering” with some friends at the gym and heard this song playing through the speakers with someone’s ipod. I haven’t really listened to lyrics, but I thought it was so cool that a rap song had incorporated one of the really pretty parts of Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto. You can really start hearing it around 0:11. According to the description for this vid, the sample is taken from Itzhak Perlman’s performance from 7:59-8:10. It’s been sped up a bit for the rap, I think.
The recording I’ve listened to most is the one by Jascha Heifetz off of his Supreme album. On here the relevant snip starts at 6:47 (he must be playing at lightning speed). The rest of the first movement is split up into parts 2 and 3. It’s a fantastic recording, and it’s really through Heifetz that I came to love this concerto.
If you’re super excited about this piece, here’s a performance by Sarah Chang when she was 12 with Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony. Relevant clip starts at about 8:13. I don’t even know if I’d accomplished pre-algebra by age 12!
For anyone who hasn’t had enough already, David Oistrakh plays it a little differently. Relevant clip at 8:52.
