I found a couple songs through a grooveshark mercedes ad today. Apparently they want to make “coupe remixes” and have you choose 8 out of 12 pre-chosen songs to remix and they’ll remix the most voted 8 into an album. I figured pre-selected songs should be good enough to listen to and found a couple songs that I liked.
I’ve heard of a few of Metric’s songs but I...

ACL Festival free sampler →
I don’t know anything about the ACL (Austin City Limits) music festival, but they have a free sampler with a few songs that I like so far. The songs by Delta Spirit, Fitz & the Tantrums, and The Head and the Heart sound promising. Haven’t listened to all of it, but I think it’s rare that I like even 3 songs on a sampler so I think it’s worth a shot. Click the title...

Coldplay - Every Teardrop is a Waterfall →
Today (6/4/2011) only, volumevote is offering a FREE download of Coldplay’s new single, “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” Follow title link for the download. So far it sounds like a safe and optimistic continuation of their previous album. It hasn’t really caught my ear yet.

He Is We - Happily Ever After
I first heard He Is We through purevolume. At the time their recordings were a little rough and instrumentation a little sparse, but you could tell they knew what they were doing. It was a little different, and I still haven’t been able to identify that element that sets this group apart. Anyway, this song, “Happily Ever After,” is one of my favorites by He Is We....

Kina Grannis - "Valentine" →
Free download of Kina Grannis’s “Valentine.” Follow the link above and there’ll be a download link. I’ve only half-listened to it as of now, but so far it sounds sweet and simple. It’s definitely re-listenable. Instrumentation reminds me a little bit of Ingrid Michaelson.

play with the pentatonic scale!
thepiano:
SO MUCH FUN! Each horizontal box represents a quarter note. 4 box per beat. Each vertical box is the pentatonic scale in D Major. The lowest box is an A. Really, any combination works because its the pentatonic scale. Make a picture and see what sound comes out of it or you can really take your time and create a masterpiece.

The All Ways - Close Enough
Browsing Purevolume every now and then yields some good results. I was a bit iffy about this song at first, but something about it was catchy. Most likely it was because I haven’t listened to pop punk in a while. It’s not necessarily the most melodically interesting song and it can seem repetitive, but I still find it catchy and I like the simple harmonization. I can see it being...

Kaleidoscope Heart - Sara Bareilles
I recently got this album through an Amazon textbook offer. It was a $5 mp3 album download on Amazon! I really like the songs I’ve heard from her. ”Love Song” was all over the radio in college and my friend introduced me to “Vegas,” which I’ve also come to really like. Her newest album, Kaleidoscope Heart, goes along the same vein with a fresher sound. I...

A Very Potter Musical
If you watch Glee, you’re probably familiar with Blaine (Darren Criss). I didn’t know it, but apparently he’s the same guy that starred as Harry in A Very Potter Musical, put on by StarKid productions. You can download the entire thing for FREE here. It’s not autotuned or anything, so it might seem a little rough around the edges, but I’ve never written or recorded...

Feats In Inches - "Chicago" Cover
Found a great free cover of “Chicago” by a group called Feats in Inches while watching a ClaraC video. It’s a solid alt rock rendition of Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago” which was on the soundtrack for the movie, “Little Miss Sunshine.” You’ll hear a cleverly integrated quote of Coldplay’s “Clocks” towards the conclusion too....

Friday Night Fever - Teenage Dream (Cover)
Friday Night Fever would probably fit best in the powerpop genre. I haven’t listened to their stuff in a while, but I wanted to plug their cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.” I think it’s a solid cover and I like the sound of a male voice with this song. Download it for free on their purevolume page. I also really liked Sam Tsui’s mashup involving this...

There are a few places you can listen to full albums that have been recently released. My buddy Michelle showed me the listening booth on music.msn.com, which allows you to stream entire albums across several genres. Haven’t played too much with it, but it’s looking really promising so far. I’m playing it off of vlc player for now....

Mêlée - The Ballad of You and I
I know this is late, but if you hurry, you can catch the still current FREE iTunes single of the week, “The Ballad of You and I” by Mêlée off of their most recent album, The Masquerade. It’s more rock-y than what I’m used to by them, but I haven’t listen to much by them. It’s got the whole echo-ey chorus-y thing going with the string backing, which always...

Sky Sailing - Tennis Elbow →
Owl City’s Adam Young has yet another side project (I guess these are his “early recordings”) called Sky Sailing. The only track I’ve heard so far is “Tennis Elbow” and it follows along the same vein as Owl City without the elaborate synth display. It’s got an easy relaxed acoustic sound that seems perfect for the summer. The instrumentation is more...

Transparent Things →
These guys were featured on purevolume’s “Picks and Promos” list, so I gave them a listen. It’s good. You can download their cover of the Beatles’ classic “Let it Be” for FREE, but the song I’m really enjoying by them is “The One.” ”All is Delicate” is definitely getting another listen from me. They have an acoustic...

Say Anything - Do Better →
The string plucky intro to Say Anything’s “Do Better” popped in my head for no particular reason so now I’m listening to it on repeat. It’s got sparse string/synth (later some cool electric guitar) instrumentation and a slower but catchy beat. I suppose it fits into the alternative category. I really like this song and it’s definitely worth a first listen....

Mochi Beats - "I want to replay airplanes" (B.O.B.... →
I was listening to B.O.B.’s “Airplanes” (fast becoming one of my favorites) when I realized it sounded a bit like the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” I tried to mix them using Audacity, but after a little searching, I found this mix that sounded way cooler and included a few other songs as well. Lining up the timing using just Audacity is not time...

I’ve been trying to use up as many “one time” plays as possible before the inevitable end of lala.com, which is why I haven’t updated much. I’m sorry for the void and posting will hopefully resume soon. In other news, I’ve started a new project. I’ve asked some friends to make “a playlist that embodies your personality.” It’s kind of...

Struan Shields - Without You
LISTEN to this song. It sounds similar to Parachute (and probably several other artists… Jon McLaughlin? I’ve been racking my brains over this… and I just found out it’s racking, not wracking). It’s easygoing guitary popness with a surprisingly good male voice. It took me by surprise because when I saw that this guy was 18, I assumed...
